This Particular Week in Beer

The title is meant to manage any expectations that this will be a weekly feature.  It won't. Although this is the second non-consecutive occurrence of this non-reoccurring feature.

This particular week has some things to talk about, Arizona Beer Week, Hungry Monk Stout Fest and more after the jump.

Hungry Monk Stout/Porter Fest

We talked about it a bit earlier, but you should know that Hungry Monk's Stout Fest drops tomorrow through the 16th, Of note is Dogfish Head's Worldwide Stout and  the only firkin of Firestone Walker Reserve in the state. See the link for the new poster.

Arizona Beer Week
As beer culture mavens we love a good logo, so we were thrilled to see the new illustration for Arizona Beer Week. We really like the inclusive North / South theme and hope there will be some t-shirts available soon.

If you are into the twitter thing, you should do us all a favor and follow so that we can get the word out in a timely manner.

We can also give you an update on the list of breweries doing the Arizona Double Red collaboration that we announced here.  Many of the members of the Arizona Brewers Guild have agreed to brew the same style of beer so that the subtle (and not so subtle) differences in process and ingredients can be discerned and discussed with beer geek and beer n00b alike.

Participating Breweries at this time are:
  • BJ's Brewhouse Goliath - Chandler
  • Gordon Biersch Code Name: Red Headed Stepchild - Tempe ( a lagered version, no less)
  • Four Peaks
  • Santan Brewing Bigger Red
  • Lumberyard
  • Rock Bottom Ahwatukee and Arrowhead

This last Saturday at Brewers Connection, the Arizona Society of Homebrewers brewed scaled versions of the recipes supplied by some of the breweries.  ASH hopes to have 12 to 16 versions of Double Red available for their February meeting which is open to the public.  The brewout featured an eclectic mix of equipment and people including  Brewmasters, Derek Osborne of BJs and Gordon Biersch's Dieter Foerstner as well as the Executive Director of the Guild, Jerry Gandt.

Some other AZBW gossip we can dish out is that there will be an all Arizona Tap takeover at Flanny's Bar and Grill in Tempe and a certain valley brewery will finally be releasing their barrel aged Belgian Strong Dark at the brewery and at Papago Brewing.

Sex Panther
Finally, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention the scene at Santan for their Chocolate Barleywine release- Sex Panther yesterday at 11:11:11 on 1/11/11 no less.  From all accounts it was the event of the month. We're so sad that the blog designed to drum up beer culture didn't have the opportunity to make it down to meet up with  @Lucklys, @AZGirlsPintOut, @beerkristine, @hunterbase, @StenoVal, @aircoleman and fooderati members Joe Johnston and Jess Harter. We're anxious to hear all about it at the next big thing.
